Should I have prenatal screening?

Screening in pregnancy is a personal choice. Talk to your health care provider about your options.

If you are wondering if prenatal screening is right for you, it might be helpful to think about how you might answer the following questions:

  • Why do I want (or not want) prenatal screening?

  • What is my chance that I will have a healthy baby?

  • What screening or testing is available to me? What can the screen or test detect?

  • How accurate is it? What are the limitations of the test?

  • What doesn’t the test tell me about my baby?

  • What are the next steps if the test indicates there is a chromosomal condition or birth defect?

  • Does this test provide the information I want to know?

There are screening options, available in Calgary, that you may want to consider during your pregnancy. It’s important to know that some screens are time sensitive, involve blood work and/or ultrasound, and the ability to do the screen may be impacted by how many babies you are pregnant with.
